This is Katherine and why, in her own words, she is taking on this epic trek of the UK’s highest peaks for HorseBack UK:
“Back in 2017, whilst enjoying a break in the Lake District, I decided I wanted to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks. I love walking. It’s my “happy place”. When I’m walking, I don’t feel judged or pressured into being sociable if I’m not feeling it, and I’m alone with my thoughts. I can walk for miles with my hubby, and we might not see another person, which is just how I like it sometimes! I completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks in 7 hours and 56 minutes, raising £645 for Horseback UK, which boosted my self-esteem and confidence.
Now, in 2023, I’m pushing myself harder and higher by taking on the National Three Peaks 24-hour challenge. I’ve always wanted to complete the N3P, so why not enjoy a “walk” whilst fundraising for a fantastic charity – Horseback UK.
We’ve all dealt with pressures and traumas in our lives, but I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid the mental and physical challenges many of our veterans have to deal with, and often in silence. Every day, military personnel sacrifice their lives so that we can continue to live pretty mundane lives, in comparison.
I’ve seen loved ones suffer from breakdowns, want to throw themselves into the nearest hedge when a firework goes off, and even attempt to take their own lives. Sadly, some have succeeded. I wanted to give something back and show my heartfelt appreciation for their sacrifice by taking on this challenge. Yes, it will be tough, and yes, I’ll probably throw my teddy out of the cot at some stage during this challenge, but… what will keep me going and pushing on despite the mental and physical exhaustion, is the thought that our veterans and serving military personnel deal with physical challenges and PTSD everyday of their lives. If they can do that, with the amazing support HBUK provide, I’m sure I can cope with it for 24 hours.”
